Maya Shigure / “The Wolf”

I’ve spent the better part of two decades obsessed with the power of the ocean. I don’t paint scenery; I paint the atmosphere of the coast.

My work is raw, high-contrast, and often focused on the darker, quieter moments before a storm. I use heavy strokes and metallic finishes to capture the way light behaves when it hits
deep water. People call me “The Wolf” because I prefer working in isolation, my best pieces come out of long, solitary hours in the studio or nights spent waiting for the right conditions
on the shore.

I don’t care for flowery descriptions of art. I just make things that look the way the ocean feels when it’s restless. It’s gritty, it’s honest, and it’s always changing. My work is currently in collections across the West Coast and Europe.
